Overview video transcript:
This video will give you an overview of each of the tabs of the Excel Budget Spreadsheet. The index tab, each button will take you to the respective tab. To get back to the Index screen there's an "Index" button on every tab. The Summary tab shows you a reconciliation of your financial accounts, it shows you where the money came and went, with Income, Giving and Expense categories. One thing to note with xlyourfinances, on any given page, the light yellow shaded cells are editable. Everything else is protected. So on this page, all of your information is going to flow into here and the only thing you can change are these yellow cells. For example, you can select this cell and set a savings goal. The savings percent graph is in sync with the Summary tab. As transactions accumulate, you'll see what you actually spent versus your goal, and see how this changes through a range of years. The "1 year / 12 years" button toggles a summary of your transactions one year (12 months) or 12 years. The displayed summary corresponds to the savings percent graph. Currently you are viewing this by month instead of by year. So the Summary tab is very powerful and can quickly show you a year to year or month to month summary. Just click the "1 year / 12 years" button to switch back and forth between the two views. You can type any year in Cell D3 and and you'll see that it changes the starting year and shows you 12 years at a time... all of your information will update based on the years displayed at the top.
The Import tab is where you take the downloaded transactions from your credit card and bank and get it organized, labeled and formatted correctly. There are a several buttons, that we will review in future videos, that make the importing of transactions a simple process regardless of the format your credit card company puts them in...when you hit post, the transactions on this tab get copied and pasted into the Transactions tab. The Transactions tab. Since this is Excel 2007 and newer, you can see there's 1 million lines available which as a result will allow to put as many years and as many transactions as you need in here and in my personal experience, one year is around 1,000 transactions.
The Expense Tracker, this is a tab that allows you to compare two categories, side by side. The cash forecast is where you put in recurring transactions, (i.e. paychecks & credit card bills) and you indicate when they are going to get paid with the amount and the forecast shows you if you are cash positive and not going negative for the month. It starts with your current bank balance and it projects it into the future.
Everything feeds into the Budget tab, so after you import transactions you can see the balances for the past 3 years beside your budget. Xlyourfinances automatically compares your budget to your actual spending year to date and month to date.
The Personal Financial Statement allows you to add assets and liabilities to see what your net worth is and see how it changes over the years which feeds into a graph. The mortgage calculator allows you to put in the term, the interest rate, principal balance and appraised value, and it will show you how much interest you're going to pay. It allows you to put in a higher payment, and see how much money you'll save.
The loans tab will allow you to compare different loan amounts, different rates and different terms. So you can make different buying decisions with the knowledge of how much interest that you're going to pay, and how aggressive you want to be with paying off certain loans.
There is a Notes tab that describes every single tab and tells you what each macro button does.
The Free tab... sometimes you just want to add something up quick or do a quick analysis so there is a free tab for you.
So that's an overview of each of the tabs. Be sure to watch the rest of the videos for an in-depth look at each one. Thank you.
